Understanding Mud-Packing

Mud has been known to hold several health properties and has been a popular way of sustaining beauty and staving off old age. Now, we're not talking about the mud you find in puddles after a heavy rain or the clay down at your local riverside — we're talking therapeutic mud!
History of Mud Packing
Mud packing, or mud bathing, has been used for hundreds of years. Mud was one of the first cosmetics, used not only for its anti-aging properties but also to elicit a therapeutic response. Some found profound healing from leprosy. In 863 BC, Prince Bladud contracted leprosy and was banished from his father's kingdom. He became a swine herdsman in Swainswick near Bath, but it wasn't long before the pigs contracted leprosy as well. One day, Bladud observed the pigs rolling around in the mud springs and noticed that after coming out, they appeared to be healed. Prince Bladud proceeded to bathe himself in the mud, and the result was the same — he too was healed.
In the early 16th century, during the bathing process, people would be washed, packed in mud, and then sent into a bath to rinse. This practice continued to be refined and made into a localized treatment process today. Now, anyone can go to their local spa or natural health clinic and receive different mud treatments to aid in healing certain ailments.
